Chemicals, preservatives and additives including carrageenan

We live in a FAST world, where take aways, quick bites and conveniences are TOP priority… but is that the best for you??

I have loved food from the day I was born and love it today. However some of the foods that I see today being sold as food ARE NOT!

Chemicals, additives, preservatives are wrecking food and our concept of food. Let me explain more…

Food and nutrition come from things in our environment that we can eat. This includes plants, animals and anything that we make from these things. IT DOES NOT INCLUDE CHEMICALS!

Somewhere along the last 20 years we have started accepting that chemicals are a “natural and nutritious”. Sorry NO! Chemicals, additives and preservatives are far from natural (despite whether they are touted as “natural” ) and are definitely not nutritious. Even synthetic vitamins and minerals are not the same as naturally occurring ones in fruit and vegetables.

So whats the dirt on chemical additives and the like?

Chemicals

These are pretty much just that. Chemically made equivalents of food components or strings of compounds to create a chemical change in a food source.

Eg: nitrates are used to keep the colour in meats such as bacon. They can cause breathing and skin problems.

Preservatives:

These are any produce/substance added to a food to extend its shelf life.

EG: Sulphur (202-220) is often used to extend fruit and wine and stop it going rancid. Common side effects include breathing problems.

Additives:

Generally include anything that is added to a food product. Once again, just because the additive may be sourced from another natural source, doesn’t mean that it is “natural” in the new product. A classic example of this is carrageenan. It is an algae that grows in Ireland and other countries.

When it is added to milk products (e.g. ice-cream, milk, yogurt etc) it helps to keep the “flavour” throughout the product. So keeps chocolate milk looking chocolate throughout the product as a posed to looking like normal milk with the chocolate all sitting on the bottom. The problems with carrageenan is that it can act like MSG in the body and cause behaviour problems, headaches, nervousness etc..

Professionally and personally I strongly recommend trying to only PURCHASE natural products. This will mean that most of your shopping will be fresh meats and vegetables, some dairy and some breads.

To ensure you only eat “clean and unadulterated foods” you really need to shop at markets, cook your own bakery goods and cook meat in its natural form (baking, frying, boiling etc). Not making complex sauces, flavours and deserts.

Good luck with it. GOOD health, I mean , EXCEPTIONAL Health only comes from eating clean, organic and NO chemicals of any sort added.
